Kitting yourself out as a 16th Light Dragoon
The first place to start when collecting your kit is the stable dress. More time is spent in stable dress than any other order of dress. Currently we are concentrating on the 1812 uniform for the later stages of the Peninsula War, and the 100 Days Campaign running up to Waterloo in 1815.
Stable Dress
- Watering cap: Wool cap in blue with red band
- Shirt: Shirts are very long in the body so that the don't ride up and expose flesh to the weather.
- Neck Stock: Black cotton stock.
- Overalls: Grey overall with black leather re-enforcements and red stripes down the outer seam.
- Braces: Grey elastic army ones.
- Stable Jacket: Short blue jacket with regimental facings.
- Waist Coat: Blue if worn. During the regency shirts were considered underwear.
- George Boots and Spurs: George Boots are the ideal, jodhpur boots are acceptable.
- Gloves: White leather riding gloves.
Campaign dress
- Shako: Black 1812 pattern Shako with yellow cap lines and 6" red over white woollen plume.
- Oilskin shako cover
- 1812 pattern Light Dragoon Tunic with scarlet facings
- Stable belt
- Cloak: Blue cavalry pattern sleeved cloak lined red. Usually strapped to the saddle, but worn in inclement weather.
- Sword Belt and Sabretache: White leather belt and slings, and black sabretache.
- Cartouche and Carbine Sling: black cartridge box with white sling and swivel for attaching to carbine.
- Bread Bag: White canvas bag used to store your rations. Be sure to get one with an adjustable shoulder strap.
- Canteen: 4 pint blue wooden bottle. Make sure the leather strap is very adjustable as this can flap around terribly when cantering.
